This is what You Need to Do to Care for Your Eyes
Eyes are vital body organs. They eyes play an important role in our everyday life, helping us to function normally. As such, you have to keep them healthy. If you follow these steps, rest assured that you will have a good eyesight until your old age.
You may think that your eyesight is fine and your eyes are healthy. However, it is good to visit an eye care professional to have comprehensive dilated eye exam to be sure. A lot of people don’t realize that they could have better eyesight with glasses or contacts. Remember that many eye diseases such as diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration do not have warning signs. Having a dilated eye exam could detect these diseases in their early stages.
During this exam, the eyes care professional puts some drops in your eyes to dilate them, allowing more light into the pupil. This enables the professional to get a better look at the back of the eyes and examine the health of your eyes. This way, he or she can tell whether our sight is at its best.
What causes eye problems and how can they be prevented?
Family history
History can repeat itself. By knowing your family’s eye health history, you will have a better insight of the potential eye diseases that you could have. The more you know, the better chance of preventing some eye problems you may suffer in the future.
Eat Right
To protect your eyesight, serve the right and healthy for the eyes. Carrots are good for your sight. All vegetables and fruits, especially, the dark, leafy green ones such as kale or collard are also important. Studies suggest that there is a great benefit in eating fish types that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and tuna.
Keep your weight in check
Being overweight and obese could increase your risk of having diabetes, which could lead to loss of vision due to diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble in managing your weight, talk to your physician about it.
Wear Protective Eyewear
Wearing a protective eyewear when you are in active sports or while doing activities such as welding is good for the eyes. This includes safety glasses, shields, eye guards that are specially designed to protect the eyes during certain activities. This protective gear is made of polycarbonate, which is ten times stronger than plastics. They are sold by eye care providers and sporting goods stores.
Wear Shades
Wearing sunglasses does not only make you cool when emphasizing a fashion statement, but it also protects the eyes from ultraviolet rays from the sun. It is best to purchase sunglasses that block 99- 100% UV-A and UV-B radiation.
Quit SMOKING
You either have to quit smoking or never think about starting it—it is not good for your eyes. It is even harmful to the rest of your body. According to studies, smoking can increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration, optic nerve damage, and cataract. These diseases can lead to blindness.
Get enough rest
Letting your eyes rest after a tiring day in front of a computer screen or after reading a book could help to keep your eyesight in check. While focusing on a task, you might forget to blink— blinking is a means for the eyes to relax. Failure to blink for a long duration could bring fatigue to your eyes. You should use the 20- 20- 20 rule —for every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to reduce the eyestrain.
Observe Hygiene
Wash your hands and clean your eyewear regularly to avoid the risk of infections. Wash your hands carefully when putting on contact lenses and replace them as required.
Observe Workplace Safety Rules
Follow workplace eye safety rules to the letter. If the nature of your work requires you to wear protective eyewear, ensure you do it.
