Fox News Correspondent Ed Henry is a Proud Liver-Donor
Fox News’ Chief National Correspondent, Ed Henry is taking a medical leave of absence, but you needn’t worry about his health. Henry is taking the time off to donate a part of his liver to his sister.
The operation was conducted on July 9th, and the news correspondent was released from the hospital only five days after undergoing surgery. His sister, Colleen Henry, has been battling a degenerative liver disease passed down in their family. Her condition is steadily improving.
Ed, who is lucky not to be affected by the same disease as Colleen, has openly spoken about his decision to become a donor. He’s also had several months of preparation and testing, which he underwent before being cleared for surgery.
Fox News published Henry’s words in an op-ed: “It is my sincere hope that talking about this journey for myself and Colleen, who has been bravely battling degenerative liver disease over the last few years, will help bring some awareness for the over 113,000 people waiting at this time for lifesaving organs (about 13,000 of whom need a healthy liver).”
Henry had to reduce the fat in his liver to be approved as a donor, and he has been working on it for some time. The journalist kept his plan of being a donor secret from his sister until he was close to his weight-loss goal for donor approval.
In moving tweet, the 47-year-old shared a photo of himself with his sister and nephew the day he left the hospital: “Five days after surgery I just walked out of the hospital as Colleen continues to make steady progress. Her beaming son Frank — and his t-shirt — said it all #grateful #livingdonor“
Henry’s heartwarming actions are not only helping his sister, but they also raise awareness of the issue. “I am determined to do whatever I can to give my sister the greatest gift of all, which quite simply is life,” he said.
