Louis Réard is credited with making the two-piece swimsuit so commonplace at beaches today, introducing his daring version to Paris in 1946 at the Piscine Molitor. This photo perfectly represents the saying that there is a place for everything, as each person is dressed for the beach setting, except for the man in the foreground, who looks like he made a last-minute stop.
A decade before Réard unveiled two-piece swimwear, women had been wearing modest versions comprising of shorts and halter tops that covered the navel. Thanks to this French automobile engineer and clothing designer, these garments no longer come with such constraints.
