These Female Soldiers are Breaking Stereotypes and Winning In and Out of Uniform
Mexican Soldiers
Until the year 2000, women were not allowed to join the Mexican National Military Service. However, during the Mexican Revolution, there were Adelitas or Soldaderas, young women in their teens and early twenties, who participated in the conflict. The 2000 regulation changes allowed women to serve in combat roles.
In the first year of female eligibility, approximately 18,000 women enrolled in combat training, demonstrating their previously restricted desire to serve their country. The women pictured here are new recruits, displaying their bravery, skill, and beauty as they prepare to join the active Mexican defense forces. This depicts inclusivity and recognition of the value of women’s input to the country’s defense.
