In 1967, the record went to Charles E. Christensen, a spirited 23-year-old radio DJ. Later came 1969’s surprising victor, 52-year-old Bertha Van Der Merwe, a South African housewife who went 282 hours and 55 minutes (11 days, 18 hours, 55 minutes) without sleep.

His entry in the Guinness Book of Records 1974 revealed the haunting reality – “He has suffered hallucinations since this highly dangerous test.”
