The lens-shaped orographic waves in the picture are known as lenticular clouds, formed when the air is stable, and winds blow across hills and mountains from the same or similar direction at different heights. While they indicate great instability in a layer of the atmosphere, the most harm they can cause is prolonged gusty winds.
