A Different Face in War

Captured by famed photojournalist Horst Faas in 1965, this eerie image from the Vietnam War offers a raw glimpse into the face of the soldiers who face their grim reality. The Vietnam conflict ignited a new breed of youth-led protests across the U.S., and many of those drafted into the jungle witnessed unspeakable carnage. Horst’s photo freezes in time the irony and tragedy gripped a generation: young men sent to fight a brutal war that they—and a growing segment of the American populace—increasingly questioned.
