Narrow Sinkhole Escape
Sinkholes are not the most common natural occurrence, but they are a reminder of how fast nature can take away what it has given. Guatemala City witnessed the horror on May 30, 2010, when a giant sinkhole more than 300 feet deep appeared, swallowing a three-story building.
A combination of Tropical Storm Agatha, the Paacaya Volcano eruption, and sewer pipe leakage inspired the sinkhole. This photo shows the damage it caused, and it’s interesting how lucky the people around it were not to get swallowed up in the hole. Unfortunately, it still caused five people’s deaths and many others’ evacuations.
