They have been celebrated for their bravery and determination in defending their nation since the pre-Soviet era.
Women have a strong presence on the front lines of combat, having joined the Russian armed forces in significant numbers since World War I. This includes trailblazing aviator Princess Eugenie Shakoskaya and other female aviators. Despite its history of female inclusion, Russia still has progress to make in addressing gender inequalities and improving opportunities for women in the military.
