These Female Soldiers are Breaking Stereotypes and Winning In and Out of Uniform

Colombian Soldier

The Colombian military is among the largest and best-equipped armed forces in Latin America, with 250,000 personnel, including a significant number of women who were not allowed to join until 1976.

Since the first woman joined the army, significant progress has been made towards gender equality in the military. As of 2022, 9,680 women were part of the Colombian Military Forces, including both active military members and civilians working for the military. The military’s willingness to accommodate women’s desire to serve and contribute to the nation’s defense is a commendable and progressive move that paves the way for other nations to follow suit.
